According to a survey just released by the School of the Environment of Tsinghua University, the current total mercury consumption in China is about 1,000 tons, accounting for about 50% of the world total, and it has become the world's largest producer and consumer of mercury. The main mercury products and mercury-related processes are acetylene-based polyvinyl chloride production, thermometers, batteries, sphygmomanometers, and electric light sources. In addition, mining pillars, coal-fired, steel, nonferrous metals, cement, chemical and other pillar industries are also heavily involved in mercury. Among them, coal-fired power plants account for 33% of domestic mercury emissions, and other industrial boilers account for 19% of mercury emissions. Experts predict that the coal consumption of coal-fired power plants will double in 2020. If no control measures are taken, domestic mercury pollution will be doubled.
