Heavy-duty truck lightweighting has always been one of the research directions for heavy-duty truck companies to improve their product competitiveness, and ultra-wide tires are one of the effective ways to achieve lightweighting of heavy trucks. It is reported that in the European and North American markets, wide-section single tires (WBS) have been Widely used in heavy goods vehicles. Applying a wide section single tire can reduce costs, reduce quality, reduce wear and fuel consumption.


During these 10 years in China, fuel prices have skyrocketed, and WBS tires have increased their application. However, in some areas of our country, wide section single tires cannot be widely used because of the maximum allowable axle load. However, with the lightweight design of heavy trucks and trailers, single-ton development has become an irreversible trend.


Perhaps some friends still don't know that the first ultra-wide tire tractor that was officially unveiled in public in China was not the two heavy-duty trucks but Dongfeng. At the Beijing Auto Show in 2008, Dongfeng Tianlong's wide-tire tractors were not placed in outdoor commercial vehicle exhibition areas with Dongfeng Tianlong's other trucks. Instead, they were placed on the Dongfeng Group's exhibits and many of Dongfeng’s passenger car products. Indoor exhibition hall.


The configuration of the Tianlong 4x2 wide-tire tractor is quite high. It can be said that it is completely in line with European models. The DCI 420-horsepower engine can achieve a maximum torque of 1870 Nm and a 16-speed ZF16S181 transmission at 1300 rpm. Front and rear disc brake axle, rear axle air suspension and so on. It should be noted that the tire specifications of Dongfeng Tianlong tire tractor are exactly the same as those of similar European models. They are all super wide tires with a size of 495/45 R22.5. The tires use Michelin's products.


● The advantages of single tires compared to traditional twins


First, lighter weight

In terms of appearance, the single tire is wider than the ordinary tire, and a single tire replaces the traditional twin tires. Compared to the twins, the large single tires have a lighter weight, lower friction, and lower manufacturing and operating costs.


Second, lower fuel consumption


Ultra-wide tires than twins, the contact surface area of ​​23%, fuel consumption decreased by 6-8%, 100 km fuel-efficient more than 2L; due to fuel economy can bring value to customers 2.1-3.5 million. Road test results in the United States indicate that fuel economy improvements ranged from 3% to 18%, and more importantly, with the reduction of fuel consumption, the nitrogen oxides emitted from vehicle emissions were reduced by 9%-45%, which promoted the logistics industry. The protection of the environment, and the extra-wide single tire can effectively reduce the weight of the vehicle body, and its lightweight effect is obvious.

Third, lower tire consumption


Compared with twin tires, the ultra-wide tires cost is reduced by 20%, and is about 744 yuan/set. The tires are replaced at least once a year; due to the reduction in tire consumption costs, the value to customers is about 7,500 yuan/year. The maintenance cost of tires has been reduced, which is equivalent to lowering operating costs. Why wouldn’t it be a good idea? The combined value of super single tires to customers can reach 6.3 to 10 million/year, and the integrated value of three years of use can reach 200,000 to 300,000. This is a considerable amount of economic benefits, it is worth trying for the application!


As domestic single-tire tractors have not passed small-scale user experiments, the use effect is still not clear, especially due to the variety of terrain and other reasons in China, it is still difficult to promote super tires in China.


First: The current implementation of domestic market policies and regulations needs to be strengthened, although the national GB1589 document states that when the axle width exceeds 400mm, the maximum allowable axle load for a single axle with 6x4 (single tire on each side) is limited to 10,000kg. It is 20,000 kg. However, toll stations in many places do not understand this type of requirement. In particular, traffic policemen in some lagging regions are deliberately searching for flaws, and they cannot be rationally explained.


The second and most important issue is the problem of people’s understanding. It is a test that new things that have not been promoted in Europe and the United States should be accepted by the Chinese people.


Thirdly, ultra-wide tires cannot be supported in domestic services. In many places in China, not even vacuum stocking is available. Not to mention extra-wide single tires that few people are interested in, and the price is also a factor constraining ultra-wide singletons.
